Hirano Laboratory Fujita Health University

Prospective students

In the Hirano Laboratory, we use measurement engineering, signal processing and machine learning to build medical devices and systems that solve problems found in clinical practice. We welcome students who want to apply engineering to medicine and who enjoy turning their own ideas into working systems.

What you will learn

  • Hardware: developing sensors for biosignals such as pulse waves, ECG and blood pressure, designing and building measurement circuits (amplifiers and filters), and assembling and evaluating measurement devices
  • Software: programming to acquire and analyse measured data, signal processing such as noise removal and feature extraction, and estimation and prediction using machine learning and mathematical models of the body
  • Turning a clinical problem into a research question and carrying it through experiments, analysis and presentation

Links with hospitals and partners

  • Several projects are carried out with clinical departments such as the Department of Stroke and the Blood Purification Centre at Fujita Health University Hospital.
  • We collaborate with universities such as Hiroshima University, and with medical device manufacturers.
  • Our results are published in leading international journals and presented at major international conferences.
